You must have a registered domain before you can use SSL certificates. Other important things to have before SSL certificate can be issued for your site are:
- An active hosting account.
- A CSR (Certificate Signing Request) generated on your web server with the correct domain/common name.
- Correct contact information on WHOIS record for the domain.
- Business validation documents (not necessary for domain validated certificates).
